5 rules for getting the most from liquid foliar fertilizers
The same product can give very different results. Right timing, right rate, both leaf surfaces, correct tank-mixing and the right crop stage.
Liquid foliar fertilizers work fast – but only when applied correctly. The same product can give very different results depending on how it is sprayed. Here are the five rules EUCHEM recommends to dealers and growers.
1. Spray at the right time of day
Early morning (before 9 am) or late afternoon (after 4 pm), when stomata are open and temperatures are low. Avoid strong sun, which evaporates the solution and scorches leaves, and avoid spraying within 4–6 hours of rain.
2. Use the right concentration
Mix at the label rate. “Stronger is faster” is a common mistake that burns leaf margins and wastes product. For young plants or hot weather, use the lower end of the range.
3. Wet both leaf surfaces
The underside of the leaf carries more stomata. Use a fine nozzle, spray upward from below and apply enough water to coat evenly without run-off.
4. Tank-mix correctly
- Do a jar test: mix a small amount and watch for 15 minutes for precipitation or separation.
- Do not mix calcium products with high-phosphate or high-sulfate products.
- Order: water → powders/granules → liquids → sticker.
- Check spray-water pH; very alkaline water reduces the efficacy of many actives.
5. Match the crop stage
- Post-harvest recovery: amino acids, nitrogen-calcium-magnesium (e.g. Azomac).
- Before and during flowering: systemic P-K, boron, zinc (e.g. Phosphite 45-15, Calcium Boron Zinc).
- Fruit filling and colouring: organic potassium, calcium (e.g. Organic Amino Potassium).
